A rectangular plot has a concrete path running in the middle of the plot parallel to the breadth of the plot. The rest of the plot is used as a lawn, which has an area of $240 m^{2}$ . If the width of . the path is 3m and the length of the plot is greater than its breadth by 2m, what is the area of the rectangular plot?

Let us depict the rectangular plot according to question

Let, the width of the plot is x meter

$∴$ Length of the plot is (x + 2) meter

According to question

3x + 240 = x(x + 2)

=3x+240=x²+2x

=x²-x-240=0

=x² - 16x + 15x - 240 = 0

=x(x-16)+15(x-16)=0

=(x - 16)(x + 15) = 0

=Here r - 16 = 0

$∴$ x = 16

x + 15 = 0

⇒x=-15 is not acceptable

$∴$ Area of the plot = x(x+2)m² = 16(16+2)m² = 16 x 18=288m² (answer).

A pipe can fill a tank in 0.9 hours and another pipe can empty in 0.7 hours. If tank is completely filled and both pipes are opened simultaneously then 450 liters of water is removed from the tank in 2.5 hours. What is the capacity of the tank?

Here, 0.9 hours = 0.9 * 60 = 54 minutes; 0.7 hours = 0.7 x 60=42 minutes

2.5 hours = 2.5 x 60 = 150 minutes

In 54 minutes first pipe can fill= $\frac{150}{54} = \frac{25}{9} p a r t o f t h e \tan k$

And in 42 minutes another pipe can empty = $\frac{150}{42}$ = $\frac{25}{7}$ part of the tank

As, the tank was filled, after opening both the tank will be filled to

$= 1 + \frac{25}{9} - \frac{25}{7} = \frac{63 + 175 - 225}{63} = \frac{238 - 225}{63} = \frac{13}{63} p a r t ∴ E m p t y p a r t = 1 - \frac{13}{63} = \frac{63 - 13}{63} = \frac{50}{63}$

According to question

$\frac{50}{63}$ parts of tank = 450 liters

$∴ 1 o r f u l l p a r t o f \tan k = \frac{450 \times 63}{50} = 567 l i t e r s .$

A sum of Tk. 3,240 was fixed to complete a work. 54 workers completed the work in 8 days and the sum was divided equally among the workers. If the work was to be completed in 3 days then how much less money each worker would receive compared to when the work work was completed in 8 days?

To complete the work in time

In 8 days, required number of worker = 54

$∴$ In 3 days, required number of worker = $\frac{54 \times 8}{3} = 144$

Primarily, each worker got = $\frac{3240}{54} = 60 t a k a$

$∴$ Later, each worker got = $\frac{3240}{144}$ = 22.5taka

$∴$ Each worker will receive = 60-22.5 37.5 Taka less. (Answer).

Two trains running at the rate of 75km and 60km an hour respectively on parallel rails in opposite directions are observed to pass each other in 8 seconds and when they are running in the same direction at the same rates as before, a person sitting in the faster train observes that he passes the other in 31 seconds. Find the lengths of the trains.

A, B and C can do a piece of work in 12, 18 and 24 days respectively. They all begin together. A work continuously till it is finished, B leaves the work 2 days before its completion and C leaves the work 4 days before its completion. In what approximate time is the work finished?

Let, the work was finished in x days.

A worked for x days

$∴$ B worked for (x - 2) days

$∴$ C worked for (x - 4) days

Now, A' s models day's work= $\frac{x}{12}$ part

$∴$ $∴$ B's 1 day's work=" $\frac{x - 2}{18}$ part

$∴$ C's 1 day's work = $\frac{x - 4}{24}$ part

According to question,

$= \frac{x}{12} + \frac{x - 2}{18} + \frac{x - 4}{24} = 1 = \frac{6 x + 4 x - 8 + 3 x - 12}{72} = 1 = 13 x - 20 = 72 = 13 x = 72 + 20 = 92 ∴ x = \frac{92}{13} = 7.07 ∴ x = 7.07 \approx 7 d a y s (a p p r o x i m a t e l y) ∴ T h e w o r k w a s c o m p l e t e d i n a p p r o x i m a t e l y 7 d a y .
