Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Tunnel/ Karnaphuli Tunnel is the country's first underground road tunnel and one of the megaprojects of the government. The journey of the tunnel started in 2016 and the construction work of the tunnel was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. The tunnel being completed, it was inaugurated on October 28, 2023, by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for vehicles for plying. This tunnel connects Chattogram to the destinations of Cox's Bazar, Teknaf, and Matarbari. The main length of the tunnel is 3.32 km with 5.35 km link roads. The project cost Tk 10,389 crore. Bangladesh goverment and the Exim Bank of China have jointly invested the project. The China Communication and Construction Company Limited (CCCC) is responsible for the tunnel's construction. With this inauguration, this tunnel has reduced around 40 kilometers of the existing distance between Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. The vehicles can run through this tunnel at a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. It is expected that within one year of inauguration of the tunnel, 50 lacs of vehicles will ply through this tunnel. Within 2025, on an average, 28,505 vehicles will cross the tunnel per day. It is forecasted that this tunnel will boost Bangladesh's GDP by 0.166%,
