অগ্ন্যাশয়ের অভ্যন্তরে আইলেটস অব ল্যাঙ্গারহ্যানস নামক এক প্রকার গ্রন্থি আছে যে গ্রন্থিতে ইনসুলিন নামক হরমোন তৈরি হয়। এ হরমোন শরীরের শর্করা পরিপাক কার্য নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে থাকে। অগ্ন্যাশয়ে যদি প্রয়োজনীয় ইনসুলিন তৈরি না হয় তখন রক্তে শর্করা বা গ্লুকোজ প্রসাবের সাথে নির্গত হওয়ার দরুন যে রোগ হয় তাকে বহুমূত্র বা ডায়াবেটিস বলে।
