১৯৪৪ সালের ১ - ২২ জুলাই যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিউ হ্যাম্পশায়ারের অন্তর্গত ব্রেটন উডস শহরে একটি সম্মেলন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এ সম্মেলনের সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী IBRD, IMF ও ITO নামক তিনটি অর্থনৈতিক প্রতিষ্ঠান গঠন করার কথা থাকলেও ১৯৪৫ সালে দুটি সংস্থা তথা IBRD ও IMF গঠিত হয়। বিশ্বব্যাংক গ্রুপকে বলা হয় Five Institution one Group. IBRD, IDA, IFC, ICSID MIGA - এ পাঁচটি অঙ্গসংস্থার সমন্বয়ে বিশ্বব্যাংক গ্রুপ গঠিত হয়।
