Bangladesh has about 24,000km of river, streams and canals that together cover about 7% of the country's surface. Most part of the country is linked by a complex network of waterways which reaches its extensive size in the monsoon period. In Bangladesh. domestic communications comprise roads, rails and waterways Rivers, streams, and canals together cover 7.0 per cent of the total surface i.e. about 24 thousand kilometers of Bangladesh. Inland water transport is one of the oldest modes, not only for economic reasons but also for environmental sustainability.

• To navigate safe in the river, there are many steps to be taken. Some of them are as follows:
• All the ferries and launches should have been renovated and additional vessels have been added to the fleet.
• Regular dredging of water ways for smooth journey and transportation of goods is must.
• Comprehensive preparations have to be taken to streamline the waterways of the country.
• As the rate of accidents on waterways is less than on roads, waterways should be increased and attention should be paid to this sector so that people can navigate safe.
• Waterway passengers should be cautious enough about the weather forecast while travelling in the rivers or other waterways.
• Knowing swimming in the water is a very important practical knowledge for every one. So every one should know how to swim. It will help us saving lives from waterways causalities.

The waterways are still cost-effective compared to other mode of transportations. Planning and management of the waterways should be people-centric
